Bojan Šarčević
Ideas of abstraction, in the conceptual and formal senses, rest at the core of Bojan Šarčević’s practice. The Bosnian-French artist’s aesthetic propositions and particular material relationships offer a starting point for the perceptual encounter and experience of form that defers certainty, revealing questions of empirical, theoretical and sensual understandings of the world.
Šarčević’s work was the subject of survey exhibitions at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz, Liechtenstein, and Institut d’Art Contemporain, Villeurbanne, France (2012). Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Rhombic Oath’, Leopold-Hoesch-Museum and Kirche Sankt Anna, Düren, Germany (2012); ‘Éventuellement’, Le Grand Café Centre d’art Contemporain, Saint-Nazaire, France (2010); ‘Involuntary Twitch’, Vleeshal, Middelburg, Netherlands (2010); ‘Only After Dark’, Kunstverein Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany (2008); ‘Already Vanishing’, MAMBO, Bologna, Italy (2008); and ‘Kissing the back of your hand makes a sound like a wounded bird’, BAWAG P.S.K. Contemporary, Vienna, Austria (2007). His work was included in the 50th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (2003), the 3rd Berlin Biennial, Berlin, Germany (2004); and Manifesta 2, Luxembourg (1998). He took part in many group exhibitions at Berardo Collection Museum, Lisbon, Portugal (2014-2015); WIELS, Brussels, Belgium (2013); Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, USA (2011); Tate, St. Ives, UK (2009); Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna, Austria (2009); ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany (2012, 2008); Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn, Germany (2006); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, USA (2005); Tate Modern, London, UK (2004); New Museum, New York, USA (2004); Modern Art Oxford, Oxford, UK (2004); and Witte de With, Rotterdam, Netherlands (2004), among others.
